I greatly value StreetsPac for its dedicated work and smart advocacy on critical issues that affect all New Yorkers. Yet, I was surprised by the endorsement of Chris Maarte. Not the endorsement, per se, but that it depicted him as a voice for street-level reform, in particular on Canal Street. He has had zero presence on Canal Street since taking office. And, since taking office, the conditions on Canal Street have only worsened significantly. My attempts to reach his office and to discuss ideas for improving conditions on Canal St in particular have been been with nothing more than a polite phone call followed by… nothing. The conditions on Canal street are parlous and I fear that Maarte has no vision for its improvement. I welcome any member of StreetsPac to visit Canal street virtually any time of any day and stand by a statement that Maarte is working to improve conditions there. Sadly, he is not.

Please stop endorsing council member Crystal Hudson in Brooklyn. They actively fight to eliminate open streets, are hostile towards street redesign or any modification, and have an extremely limited voting record for a small group of special interests.

Its a disgrace that the corrupt DOT protects drivers who break the law rather than law abiding residents. Having worked closely with TLC and OATH I can state DOT objections had no substance in fact. Because this law is stalled, children are dying thanks to DOT.


Also the fine also was completely inadequate and would cost more to administer than it would collect. It has no deterrent effect and would not be enough for most people to bother reporting violations.

I’m very interested in ending the Stipulated Fine Program. This program allows delivery companies to pay a reduced fee for traffic violations, in exchange for giving up the ability to challenge the ticket in court. With this program, New Yorkers are giving handouts to giant corporations (many of whom have profited off the pandemic) as well as the ability to act with impunity on our streets. The next NYC administration ought to eradicate the Stipulated Fine Program, not only to make our streets safer, but to provide the city with much needed revenue at an extremely challenging fiscal moment. Personally I think we should go a step further, and not only eliminate the Stipulated Fine Program, but also invert its design. Instead of allowing everyone to pay the same amount for the same infraction, these massive companies ought to be paying a progressive penalty in order to disincentivize this anti-social behavior.


For these reasons, I ask you to consider adding a question to your endorsement questionnaire which would ask mayoral candidates whether they’ll, at the very least, end this asinine program.

Alyson: I respect your right to vote for who you want. But this is about DONALD TRUMP, not about your hurt feelings re: Bernie, or distaste for the DNC. I’ve seen your rhetoric on how you don’t want to vote for the Democratic nominee for president if it’s not Bernie Sanders. I respect and appreciate where you are coming from as a full supporter of Medicare-For-All, reducing college debt, making the rich pay their fair share in taxes and most of the other ideas that Senator Sanders espouses. It would be nice to be able to have all of that right away, but sometimes change doesn’t happen as quick as we’d like.


However, as a member of the LGBTQ community (albeit in a Blue state,) I still feel the weight of discriminatory measures and hateful rhetoric that Trump has hurled at our community, and I can only imagine how much worse its become for non-whites and non-males in this Trump-toxic environment. Hate crimes and LGBTQ suicide rates are at all-time highs and discriminatory policies are being shoved down the throats of Americans more frequently than ever before. So many people are hurting right now and we don’t have the luxury of “waiting out” Trump and hoping for a “revolution” in 2024/5. Not to mention that Global Warming/Climate Change needs to be addressed yesterday and isn’t going to get any better by the end of a second Trump administration.

“Bernie did not have a good night last night. Whether he drops out or not remains to be seen, but I’m seeing reality setting in amongst a lot of Bernie voters, and, as a very disappointed Warren supporter, let me extend my sympathy


and empathy – without any kind of vermin emoji – because I know it sucks. It really does. Neither of these two candidates were in my top 5 – one wasn’t even in my top 15.


But, holy shit, is it wild to see these people who stressed the importance of voting for the progressive when other candidates dropped out suddenly declare that they are just going to stay home on election day because Bernie didn’t


get the nomination. Fucking. Wild.


As a trans woman living under this regime, which is very specifically and directly targeting my community’s ability to exist in public, and participate in civic life, this is an incredibly privileged position to see. More people like


me will die under 4 more years of Trump than will do so under 4 years of any non-GOP administration. Even the benign (well, indifferent) neglect of democratic administrations past is far preferable to this.


And that’s just the trans community. Parallel efforts are also underway targeting the rights of LGBQP folks to exist in public and live and love without discrimination, too.


The misogyny is endemic everywhere, but obviously worse under He-Who-Grabs-The-Pussy.


And this is all from my position as a white woman. This doesn’t even begin to address the violence perpetrated against communities of color every single day this actively white supremacist administration holds power over black and


brown people. Every human right they can strip, they are trying – with all-too-frequent success – to strip. No matter the implicit bias and racism amongst all white people, you can’t really believe the lives of your black, brown and


Asian friends are just the same under a Trump administration as under any Democrat administration?


And, of course, voting is more than just about the president. It’s about voting in progressive and leftward local council members, school board members, state legislators, Congress members, governors, etc. The right put in decades of


work to take control over as much local and state-level power as possible to set up the ability to exercise minority rule as they have for the past two decades. The fact that the left refuses to put that work in instead of just taking


their ball and going home at the first or second setback is why the gop and Nazi right know that they just have to wait us out.


If nothing else, electing Trump guarantees a 7-2 conservative Supreme Court majority, which means that it doesn’t matter who we elect because no progressive policy will survive a Supreme Court challenge for two generations.


A vote for anyone other than the eventual Democratic nominee is a vote for Trump. Period. It sucks and it’s really shitty that this is the system we have to work in, but this is the system we have to work in until we can get in a


position to change it. Sitting at home on election day is co-signing this system’s validity – you can’t change anything from there.


I’m sure this sounds really shaming, and it definitely is a little, but it’s also true. This country is at an inflection point. It is impossible to overstate the danger of Trump.


If all of those voters this meme imagines are just waiting to vote for Bernie actually showed up in the Democratic primary, he’d win. The fact that they won’t show up in the practice round does not bode well for their commitment in


November. Bernie doesn’t generate turnout. Biden, for whatever godforsaken reason, does. He’s not my choice, but here we fucking are. I’ll vote for Bernie as he misses the Illinois primary, because my candidate already dropped out and


showing support for his policy with a strong second place finish will help move the party platform leftward, and come November, I will show the fuck up, hold my goddamn nose and vote for Biden. Because lives are on the line. Mine and


those of people who are not like me.


That’s what really kills me. I kept seeing meme after meme attacking Warren supporters for not immediately supporting Bernie that said variations on “Bernie voters actually want to help people who are not like them” which is a cool


sentiment until they show their true colors by declaring that they’ll just stay home when he loses instead of actually casting a vote in November that reduces the most harm, even if it’s an incremental improvement (which is the only


actual way change happens).


Do as you please with your vote. It’s your right as a citizen. But a declaration that if you can’t vote for Bernie, you just won’t vote, only says that you recognize that no matter the danger that another Trump term represents, you


know you’re not the one in actual danger and therefore, you’re just kind of fine with that."
